Local Waste Plan
Recycling waste is better for the environment than the alternative of throwing it away to be landfilled.
Landfilling waste is considered the worst environmental option for waste. There are difficulties finding suitable land for disposal sites and the associated pollution issues that can arise, have been linked to the global problem of climate change.
Reducing, reusing and recycling waste minimises this risk and also contributes to the saving of energy and the earths resources.
All councils are set recycling targets by the Scottish Government. These targets have been put in place to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
- stop waste growth by 2010
- 40% recycled by 2010
- 50% recycled by 2013
- 60% recycled by 2020
- 70% recycled by 2025
More information is available from The Scottish Zero Waste Plan.
Achieving The Targets
To achieve the targets, councils introduced waste separation schemes for all households. Initial consultation took place with householders across Forth Valley and details of the consultation are available in the Forth Valley customer consultation final report.
Since then a Strategic Outline Case has been published and this details the long term management of waste within the Forth Valley.
To check that we are meeting our targets, waste collection information is gathered and details on how to access this can be obtained from our Waste Data page.
