Adult Literacy and Numeracy
Clackmannanshire Adult Literacies supports adult learners who wish to improve their reading, writing, spelling, number and basic budgeting skills. This provision is free to all adults living in Clackmannanshire.
Staff help adults to build up more confidence in these skills at a range of levels, from the beginner reader and writer to adults who wish to improve or brush up on existing skills.
This includes people who intend to take qualifications or for whom a higher level of these skills is required at work, for example those who are intending to take on a wider range of responsibilities or who want to apply for a more challenging role.
We encourage informal learning suited to adults and have computers to support this.
Who are the adults we support?
- People who lack confidence in their writing, reading and number skills,
- people who want to help their children or grandchildren with their homework, computer games or bedtime stories,
- people who need help with reading bills, calculating best buy options, help with counting money, price comparisons, using an ATM and many more everyday tasks,
- people whose work now includes more writing or number work,
- people who want to take their first steps back into education but don't know where to start,
- people whose childhood education was a negative experience.
- people who want to improve their confidence in specific areas,
- people who are unemployed and want to improve their skills to help them gain employment.
We offer a welcoming positive experience where the learner decides on what s/he wants to learn through their own personal learning plan.
How we help
- We offer guidance in identifying a starting point for learning.
- We work with individuals and groups to ensure that they have individual and group learning plans that provide a direction for learning and support.
- Our learner-centred programmes mean that we help adults to learn what they want to learn.
- We provide learners with a place to learn that's friendly, positive and encouraging.
- We support learning in a way that suits the learners' style and pace.
- We provide a learning environment that is not like a classroom.
- We provide support to achieve learning goals.
- We provide ongoing guidance throughout learning.
Other services
We also provide free computer training and English as a second Language (ESOL) classes.
