Rugby Development

Rugby ballThe Wee County has a great tradition of playing rugby, the centre of which are the two long established clubs in the area, Alloa RFC and Hillfoots RFC.

Clackmannanshire Rugby Development Officer's remit is wide and varied from grassroots to the National Pathway and elite player programme.

We have 1 full-time rugby development officer who coaches and promotes rugby in the area.

Rugby in Schools

Nursery

In Clackmannanshire we start them young, and most children can experience rugby in their local nursery. Specially trained staff deliver a nursery specific rugby programme which develops fundamental physical skills.

Primary

In all primary schools, tag rugby is now taught to P5 and 7 pupils as part of the PE curriculum.

Tag rugby is a non-contact form of the sport, which encourages both boys and girls to develop their rugby skills within a safe and fun environment. The schools play three times a year in their cluster Tag rugby festivals held at both the local rugby clubs.

Contact rugby is also taught to P7 pupils in Clackmannanshire, and a contact festival runs alongside the Tag event.

There are a number of lunch time and after school rugby clubs for P4 - P7 age groups where they are coached by specialist rugby coaches.

Scottish Rugby and the Food Standards Agency run a joint initiative where they target 6 schools in the area. The schools' P5 - P7 classes receive rugby coaching and healthy eating advice over 6 weeks. The school is awarded a signed Scotland Rugby Team framed picture when they successfully complete the programme.

Secondary

Secondary school rugby is played across the central belt at a number of festivals.

Clackmannanshire is represented in the festivals by Alva Academy, Alloa Academy and Lornshill Academy. The local Secondaries also compete in the Central Schools' Cup and seven-aside competitions with a number of S1/S2 festivals throughout the year.

Secondary school players also have the chance to take part in the national Brewin Dolphin Cup competitions and inter-school fixtures.

Extra curricular sessions are held
